Russian Strike on Dniester Plant Triggers Major Oil Spill in Moldova, Ukraine
A Russian attack on Ukraine’s Dniester hydroelectric plant on March 7 resulted in a massive oil spill, causing water pollution in the Dniester River, which is a vital water source for Moldova and the southwestern regions of Ukraine. Moldova declared a state of alert for the next 15 days, while water supplies were cut off in the country’s third-largest city, Balti, as well as several towns in the north, with schools shifting to online classes. Though the oil spill was reportedly stopped, the level of water pollution is still several times above the safe limit in several regions. The situation was further aggravated as Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who is pro-European, accused Russia of causing the environmental disaster, while Moldovan police reported an armed Russian drone landing in the country’s territory.
